Repair or modify damaged or defective glass-fiber parts and molds, checking thicknesses, densities, and contours to ensure a close fit after repair. Properly cure parts by letting them set at room temperature, placing them under heaters or baking them in ovens as the individual product requires. Apply release agents to mold surfaces to facilitate assembly and removal of laminated parts. Check completed products for conformance to specifications and for defects by checking them visually, cross referencing measurements with measuring tape or by tapping them to detect bubbles or dead spots. Properly select, measure and cut fiberglass mat, cloth and wood bracing materials as required by projects being assembled. Pat or press layers of saturated mat or cloth into place on molds, using brushes or hands, and smooth out wrinkles and air bubbles with hands or brush rollers. Mix catalysts into resins in proper concentration for selected volume and saturate cloth and mats using brushes. Mask off mold areas which are not to be laminated, masking tape, or special sprays containing mold-release substances. Spray chopped fiberglass, resins, and catalysts onto prepared molds or dies using pneumatic spray guns with chopper attachments. Pneumatic application of gelcoat to mold surfaces prior to placement of fiberglass mats, repeating layers until products have the desired thicknesses and plastics have jelled. Inspect, clean, and assemble molds before beginning work. When required to move heavier or larger objects, enlisting the assistance of other employees to ensure safe lifting techniques and minimizing damage potential is expected. Must be physically able to stand and walk throughout shift as well as push/pull up to 80lbs and lift/carry up to 50lbs. Maintaining an orderly work area is expected as well within reason considering the nature of the job. Experience operating in a spray booth, running a chopper gun as well as hand laying parts is necessary. Positive attitude, professional level quality of work and high attention to detail expected. Ideal candidate will be coachable and willing to accept constructive criticism as well as be willing to learn from their mistakes as found after parts are cured, pulled and checked. 90-day training window with continued training as new parts are ordered. Minimum two years’ experience in this field or similar. Lead chopper gun operator and gelcoat booth technician in family-owned and operated manufacturing facility building commercial dog grooming tubs, Packasport Roof Top Carriers and various other custom fiberglass products.
